Daytimer
Type Design
Daytimer is an reverse contrast extended typeface. Inspired by the type foundry, Schelter and Giesecke, Richard Serra's sculptures and remixed with the Asian daytime club scene that took place during the 90's in London, UK.
The Bhangra music that is associated with the daytime club scene is described as hard humanist. The artists took traditional Bhangra beats and remixed them to appeal to the younger generations, who were largely made up of second generation South Asians.
This inspires the key feature of the typeface which is the reverse contrast, remixing the traditional calligraphic strokes. The extended grotesk style of the typeface is derived from Schelter and Giesecke's specimens. While, the large organic counter spaces and descenders echo the fluidity of Richard Serra's sculptures, when viewed from a birds eye view.
